in conjunction with: Internal Medicine Society of Australia & New Zealand
(New Zealand Branches) Australian & New Zealand Society for Geriatric Medicine
Australian & New Zealand Society of Palliative Medicine

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the organising committee I have great pleasure in inviting you to participate in our Annual Scientific Meeting.

Our three specialty societies in combination with the RACP cover the breadth of medicine. The theme of the conference 'Intersections and Transitions' emphasises the need for collaboration in the care of patients and to note transitions in the patient's health journey e.g. living with chronic illness, moving to palliative care, living with disability.  Medical updates will include atrial fibrillation, neurodegenerative disease, multiple sclerosis, pain management and end of life planning to name some.

Our key note speakers Dr John Bourke, Senior Cardiologist, Freeman Hospital (UK); Dr Anthony Back, Professor of Medicine, University of Washington, Seattle (USA); Professor Martin Connolly, Freemasons Professor of Geriatric Medicine, The University of Auckland, and Dr Sinéad Donnelly, Palliative Care Specialist, Capital and Coast DHB will address innovative and topical aspects of our discipline which will be informative and will stimulate debate.

Besides a great scientific programme, we have organised social events in a relaxing and entertaining environment, which will create fantastic opportunities for networking.

We would like to welcome you to Auckland, the City of Sails.  Discover for yourself what the city has to offer!

Yours sincerely

Maree Todd
Conference Convenor

ANZSPM

The Australian and New Zealand Society of Palliative Medicine (ANZSPM) is the specialty medical society for doctors practising in or with an interest in Palliative Care. Members include vocationally registered Palliative Medicine Specialists, Medical Officers working in Palliative Care, General Practitioners, Specialists in other disciplines and Palliative Medicine trainees. Many members work in Palliative Care Services in Hospice, Community or Hospital teams. A number are General Practitioners working part-time in General Practice and part-time in Palliative Care.

“Palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problems associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual” [WHO Definition of Palliative care 2002].

IMSANZ

General Physicians are consultant specialist physicians with an FRACP or equivalent, trained to rapidly and expertly assess all of a patient’s medical problems, to diagnose and prioritise clinical conditions, to develop and implement an appropriate, evidence based, and cost effective management plan. General Physicians provide specialist consultant care to adult patients requiring acute medical admission or chronic/ambulatory care and to liaise with subspecialists and general practitioners where needed. Patients comprise those with undifferentiated, complex and / or multisystem diseases, and those who do not fit into, or necessarily need the full gamut of, subspecialty care (e.g. IHD, heart failure, COPD, pneumonia, cellulitis, UTI, diabetes, DVT/PE and stroke). They have expertise in prescribing and monitoring patients on a wide range of medications including those that are 'specialist only'.

Many General Physicians also practice within another subspeciality of internal medicine (e.g. geriatrics, cardiology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases), and these additional skills are particularly useful in regional or rural locations where there may be limited access to pure subspecialists. The Internal Medicine Society of Australia and New Zealand (IMSANZ) is the specialty society for general physicians in Australasia.
